  3. This disc contains an electronic version of the SIGGRAPH 96 Conference 
  4. Proceedings. All of the contents of that book are included on the disc, 
  5. along with additional electronic documents provided by the authors, and 
  6. tools to use in viewing the disc's contents.

  21. ADOBE ACROBAT PDF DOCUMENTS
  22.  
  23. The majority of the documents on this CD-ROM are in the Adobe Acrobat
  24. PDF file format; installing one of the Acrobat Reader applications found
  25. on this CD-ROM or using an already-installed version of Acrobat Reader
  26. will help you to get the most benefit from this CD-ROM publication.
  27. For most supported platforms, the version of Adobe Acrobat Reader software
  28. found on this CD-ROM includes advanced searching capabilities.

  30. There are a few features of the Adobe Acrobat PDF file format that we 
  31. would like to mention:
  32.  
  33.   - the files titled AUTHINDX.PDF and CONTENTS.PDF are lists of 
  34.     contributors, papers and panel statements. Each entry in these
  35.     files is linked to another PDF document on the CD-ROM. If you 
  36.     select a paper's title, or a contributor's name, the PDF document
  37.     attached to the link will automatically open. To return to the 
  38.     previous document, select the double left arrow on the Adobe 
  39.     Acrobat Reader menubar.
  40.     
  41.   - A number of papers have supplemental QuickTime animation files 
  42.     associated with them. Wherever possible, these animation files have
  43.     been linked to still images in the Adobe Acrobat PDF files. Each
  44.     image-to-animation link is distinguishable in two ways: 
  45.     
  46.       - the image itself is bordered with a thin black box, and
  47.       
  48.       - when the cursor is moved over the image, the cursor will change
  49.         to a "pointing index finger" shape.
  50.         
  51.     When an image-to-animation link is selected, an application capable 
  52.     of displaying a QuickTime animation will be started, and the animation
  53.     passed to it. Your computer system may already be configured to handle
  54.     this. If not, the configuration is simple. UNIX users should read the
  55.     "PDFQTHLP.TXT" document found on this CD-ROM for more information.
  56.     
  57.   - Each paper has been enhanced with "article following" -- if you click
  58.     in the title area of the papers, you will see an enlarged view of the
  59.     paper, and be able to read it, column by column, from start to finish.

  65. A suite of software has been included on this CD-ROM to assist the user in
  66. successfully viewing the electronic documents on the CD-ROM. Included are

  70.       Macintosh / UNIX / DOS / Windows platforms
  71.   - Apple QuickTime -- animation display software for
  72.       Macintosh / Windows platforms
  73.   - Compact Pro -- file compression software for the Macintosh platform
  74.   - Sound Machine -- audio player software for the Macintosh platform
  75.   - Sparkle -- MPEG animation software for the Macintosh platform
  76.   - suntar -- UNIX "tar" format file software for the Macintosh platform
  77.   - xanim -- animation display software for UNIX platforms
  78.   - xpdf -- public-domain PDF file reader for UNIX platforms

  82. DISC CONTENTS

  84. At the top level you will find several files and directories.
  85. Their names and contents are:

  87. ACROBAT - directory
  88.   Contains Adobe Acrobat Reader software for Macintosh / UNIX / 
  89.   DOS / Windows platforms. Each package has its own installation script, 
  90.   and a "README" file that will guide you through the installation process.
  91.   
  92. AUTHINDX.PDF - file
  93.   This file contains an alphabetically ordered list of all contributors
  94.   to the SIGGRAPH 96 Conference Proceedings, with each entry linked to 
  95.   that contributor's PDF document on the disc.
  96.   
  97. AWARD.PDF - file
  98.   This file contains the SIGGRAPH 96 Computer Graphics Achievement Award
  99.   text and awardee's image.
  100.   
  101. CONTENTS.PDF - file
  102.   This file contains the Table of Contents of the disc, with
  103.   each entry linked to its PDF version on the disc. Once you
  104.   have installed the appropriate Acrobat Reader application
  105.   you can navigate the entire disc from this file.
  106.   
  107.   If you are using the Acrobat Reader version 1.0 reader,
  108.   you will need to open each file individually -- the links
  109.   built into this file will not function.
  110.   
  111. COPYRITE.MAC - file
  112.   This file contains the standard ACM Copyright Notice.
  113.   
  114. COVERS.PDF - file
  115.   This file contains the front and back covers, frontispiece
  116.   (or title page), and cover image credits from the conference
  117.   proceedings book.
  118.   
  119. INDEX - directory
  120.   This directory contains files used by the Adobe Acrobat Search engine.
  121.   Of particular interest is the file with ".pdx" suffix -- it contains
  122.   the Acrobat Search index for this disc. If you wish to take advantage
  123.   of the advanced searching capabilities built into the version of Adobe
  124.   Acrobat Reader accompanying this CD-ROM, it is this file you should 
  125.   access when initializing the search process.

  127. PANELS - directory
  128.   This directory contains PDF versions of each of the panel statements,
  129.   as well as the SIGGRAPH 96 Panels Chair's preface remarks.
  130.   
  131. PAPERS - directory
  132.   This directory contains PDF versions of all of the papers presented
  133.   at the SIGGRAPH 96 conference, including supplemental electronic
  134.   documents provided by the author. Also included is the SIGGRAPH 96
  135.   Papers Chair's preface remarks.

  137. PDFQTHLP.MAC - file
  138.   This file contains instructions for configuring the UNIX version of
  139.   Adobe Acrobat Reader so that linked QuickTime movies will be displayed
  140.   in the "xanim" application when they are selected from within a PDF
  141.   document.

  143. READ_1ST.MAC - file
  144.   This file.
  145.  
  146. SUPPRTSW - directory
  147.   This directory contains software which will assist in uncompressing
  148.   and displaying various kinds of documents. Software is available for
  149.   Macintosh, UNIX, and Windows platforms.

  151. SUPPORT.MAC - file
  152.   This file contains information on how to obtain technical support
  153.   or to pass along comments and questions concerning this CD-ROM.
